Creating recurring tasks that fit real life
“Every day” and “every week” cover only a small part of real habits. The recycling bin goes out every other Tuesday, the bill falls on the 5th of the month, the team meeting happens on the first Monday. Here's how to set up these recurrences and how the reminder fires.
Available recurrences
| Type | Concrete example |
|---|
| Daily | Take medication every evening at 9 pm |
| Weekly | Water the plants every Saturday |
| Every N weeks | Take out the recycling bin every other Tuesday |
| Monthly on a fixed date | Read the meter on the 5th of each month |
| Yearly | Renew home insurance in September |
The interval is what unlocks most real cases: “every 2 weeks,” “every 3 months.” This setting is what lets you express “every other Thursday” without creating two separate tasks.
Creating a recurring task in two minutes
- Open the Tasks tab and create a new task.
- Turn on recurrence, choose the frequency (daily, weekly, monthly, yearly).
- If needed, set the interval: 2 for every other week, 3 for every quarter.
- Set the reminder time for this task — it's independent from other tasks.
- Save: the next reminder appears in the calendar on the calculated date.
Voice variant: “Create a recurring task, take out the recycling bin, every other Tuesday, reminder at 7 pm.” The assistant fills in the frequency, interval and time from one sentence.
The trap of a badge stuck at 1
A recurring task by definition always has a next due date. A naive counter would therefore forever show at least one item to do, even right after finishing today's occurrence — and a badge that never drops to zero eventually gets ignored.
The rule applied is therefore deliberately strict: only occurrences due today or overdue are counted. Non-recurring tasks whose due date is more than three days away are also excluded from the counter. Result: the badge describes today's workload, not the entire future.
Reminder in the calendar or notification?
Both, and they complement each other. The recurrence generates a visible occurrence in the calendar, letting you plan ahead by checking your week. At the set time, a push notification fires on the device, even with the app closed. On mobile, once installed as an app, the badge on the icon updates in the background.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if I miss an occurrence?
It stays overdue and keeps being counted. The next recurrence is calculated from the scheduled date, not the completion date.
Can different tasks have different reminder times?
Yes, the time is a per-task setting. A medication reminder at 9 pm and a trash reminder at 7 pm coexist without conflict.
